Picking a wood bat is not as simple as it seems.

 

Hitiing with a wood bat makes you take a correct swing and hit the baseball on the sweet spot of the barrel.

With aluminum bats, players can get away with taking poor swings and still get positive results, because the ball carries much further on aluminum and the margin for error in the swing and swing path are much smaller.

Unlike a wood bat, players don't have to hit the sweet spot with an aluminum bat. With a wood bat, you know instantly if you didn't find the sweet spot.  The earlier a player begins training with wood, the better hitter he will become. Many colleges today hit with wood bats prior to the season.
